Steve James documentary ‘City So Real’ coming to National Geographic channel this fall, with added footage

Two hours of the original four-hour version premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival’s “Indie Episodic” slate. In 2018 and 2019 James and company filmed various Chicago mayoral candidates on the campaign trail, while weaving in an array of ordinary and extraordinary citizens. “City So Real” veers from a Bridgeport barbershop full of retired Chicago Police Department veterans, to the unexpectedly funny minutiae of contesting ballots, to the long shadow of the death of Laquan McDonald, culminating in the trial of CPD officer Jason Van Dyke.
